THROW A DROP OF WATER INTO THE SEA TO PREVENT IT FROM DRYING UP
Oostende Belgium 2017
For @thcrstlshp public art festival .
At first I wanted to paint someone from the social housing where I was painting in Oostende
But I didn’t want to portray anyone for any specific meaning. I like to paint people half cropped to be a symbol for and represent all of us as I don’t want to celebrate or glorify any one person.
So I interviewed people living there and going into their homes found that they all had these photo albums of memories and people. Some known and some unknown to them
This is something we can all identify with and this was the inspiration for the mural
A homage to memories
A reflection on nostalgia
A symbol of interconnectedness
How we keep memories alive of those know and those unknown to us
The text on the wall and the title of the piece is ‘Throw a drop of water into the sea to prevent it from drying up’
This line is inspired by the teachings of Gautama Buddha
When the Buddha was asked how one could prevent a drop of water from drying up? He replied: “By throwing it into the sea.”
May all be free and may all be happy
Thank you to all the people that helped make this mural possible
